| AL or MS - unk Willie Smith | |

Birth:
about 1889-1891 Marriage: Maggie Streetman unk unk unk Death: March 26, 1930 Lee Mississippi Children: Willie Robert Smith - born April 7, 1930 Tupelo, Lee County, MS Comments?Willie Smith met my grandmother Maggie Mae Streetman of Burnsville, Tishomingo County, MS sometime before 1930 and they ran off to an unknown location and were married. Willie is said to have possibly worked for a Mr. Hanson, as he wore work shirts with the name "Hanson" written inside the collars. He is rumoured to have been from the general area of Greenwood, either Monroe or Itawamba County MS. His death certificate gives only "Bill Smith" and "Miss Thomason" as parents. Place of burial not given on death certificate, but they were living in Mooreville, Lee County, MS at the time of his death. My grandmother's brothers tried to kill him on several occasions. He may have had a criminal record. I do not know, but he must have done something to provoke my granduncles unless they were just downright ornery themselves. My father was raised by his uncle Charlie Jasper Steetman of Burnsville, Tishomingo County, MS from the age of 3 and was told very little about his father's family. I want to solve this mystery. 1/13/2004 8:04:21 PM by Email |

Birth:
appr. 1818 Marriage: Robert Campbell 1939 Ireland Death: approx. 1840 Ireland Children: James Smyth Campbell - Born 1839 in Ireland, emigrated to Peterborough, Ontario. Comments? This woman was probably born in England, died in Ireland during or shortly after childbirth. Her husband and son emigrated to Canada in the early 1940's. I suspect her father was Bt. Sir Rev. Edward Bowyer Smijth/Smyth, and Letitia Cecily Weyland, but I am having trouble proving it. She is not listed in Burkes Peerage, but she died young so that may be the reason. 4/21/2006 2:32:58 PM by Email |

I have personally verified every name, every date, and every place in the information given from Bible records, census records, marriage records, death records, obituaries, and a letter written by Myles Fredrick Smith (1890-1986), a grandson of James Davenport Smith & Mary Elizabeth [Shaw], about family members he had known personally. The precious little I know about my GG-Grandpa James Davenport Smith is given below. Per the 1860 Oglethorpe Co Ga, he was "Smith, James/HH/wm age 32 Ga/overseer" Per the 1870 Greene Co Ga census, he was "Smith, James/HH/wm age 44 Ga/farmer" Per the 1880 Paulding Co Ga Mortality Schedule: "Smith, J.D./wm age 54 Ga/Ga/Ga/married/farmer/died of typhoid Jun 1879" The only clue I have about any of his kinfolk was found in an old letter written by one of his oldest grandsons, Myles Fredrick Smith, who was born and raised in Polk Co Ga. Cousin Myles wrote that his "grandfather James D. Smith served in the Civil War and that his mother was Prudence Smith." My GG-Grandma, Mary Elizabeth [SHAW] was born 24 Dec 1835 in Abbeville, SC and died between the 1900-1910 Polk Co Ga censuses. Her parents were Robert Washington Shaw & Martha Patsey [ASHLEY] who died in Cherokee Co Al. Most of this information was verified by more than one source. 6/27/2003 4:20:31 PM by Email |

I do remember my Grandmother saying that her father died of poisoning and Mattie never remarried after that. My Grandmother married Joe H.Smith and that date I don't know right now,But the whole family lived in Walton County,Ga. 1/13/2005 6:25:07 AM by Email |

However, his age did not agree with that of Isaiah of Barbour Co. Wile living in GA, Isaiah Smith, son of Mosses Smith, signed a deed 30 Oct. 1857, six months after the death of Isaiah Smith of Barbour Co. Therefore, Isaiah Smith, son of Moses Smith of Marion Dist., SC could not be the Isaiah Smith of Barbour Co. (by Clarine Smith Tucker) Isiah or Isaiah was enumerated in the 1830 census of Houston Co., GA, and was not found in the 1840 census. However, all families were not listed in the census. 1882/1883 Marriage: Waldina Diaz 1916 Panama Canal Zone Death: UNK UNK UNK Children: Elizabeth Maria/Mary Smith, born Oct. 9, 1916, in the Panama Canal Zone. Comments? The parents of Peter S. Smith were John Gray Smith m. Elizabeth Josephine Knapp, both from Charleston, SC. Both John Gray and Elizabeth Smith died and are buried in Charleston, SC (documented). Several siblings: Grover, Frank, Ethel, and one other sister whose name escapes me. Peter lived in Manhattan, NYC, at the time he signed to work on the building of the Panama Canal, in 1912. He was a marine engineer by profession, as were most of the men in his family. He met and married my grandmother, Waldina Diaz, in Panama. In 1917, he left Panama to return to the USA, never to see his family in Panama again. Grover, Peter's younger brother, also a marine engineer, lived in Brooklyn, NYC. He and his wife, Anna, originally from Bohemia, show up on the 1930 census for Brooklyn. Grover and his wife did not have any children that we know of. He may have died aboard ship in the 1940s. Peter may have had another family living in Maryland. He worked on several ships after returning to the USA, which I have documented, but he has been lost to our family history. 3/15/2003 10:06:12 AM by Email |

Hingham, MA, res. & d. Taunton, MA, will dated 22 Feb 1679; m.(1)Agnes (5 children), m.(2) Sarah (1 child).] Comments? ?(12a) Capt/Mr. JOHN SMYTHE, Esq. (SMITH/SMYTH), b. 1588, d. ?? (1) Susanna ?? , b. d. (13a) Francis Smyth b. 1618, ?Stratford on Avon (Wootton) , England. d. 1679 (?Taunton, Bristol County, MA?) *Name written as 'Smythe' in some Jamestown records. *Arrived on the ship ‘Elizabeth’ in 1611. http://english-america.com/places/va625011.html Possible sister/cousin by the name of Isabell/Isabella/Izabell Smythe, b. c1589 in Wapping, Middlesex, England (same spelling as John) married originally to Richard Pace, Ancient Planter of James town and then to Capt. Willaim Perry of Jamestown after 1625. Thought to be related to John Smythe, Ancient Planter of Jamestown. Isabellas father is John Smythe b. 30 Aug 1558. *Identified as a ‘Captain’ in some early Jamestown records . *Returned possibly to Stratford On Avon in England with Susanna for birthing of Francis. This would suggest a connection with the Carrington-Smyths of Wooton Hall. *Susanna returned from England on the ship ‘Bona Nova’ in 1619 with son Francis. *Francis (son) arrived on the ship ‘Bona Nova’ in 1619 at 1 year of age matching birth date identified in his will in 1679 at age 60. *Noted in Jamestown documents with ‘E’ following name suggesting he was identified also as an ‘Esquire’. *Listed as member of Jamestown Colony at “Burrows Hill” by 1624. Identified as an ‘Ancient Planter’ in Jamestown having purchased/rented Burrows Hill plantation prior to 1616 and renaming it 'Smiths Mount'. *Associated with Haddon and Hepnall Halls – all located near Norwich, Nolfolk, England. *1629, 1632, Elected Burgess for Smiths Mount and Pains. *William POWELL, John SMITH and John BURROW appear to be related - In "Colonial Surry" by John B. Boddie, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1966, p. 53, it says, "John SMITH, ancient planter, came over in the Ship "Elizabeth" in 1611. He later purchased or rented "Burrows Hill" and called "Smith's Mount". He and Captain William POWELL were brothers-in-law of the Provost Marshall of Middlesex County, England, quite an influential gentleman in the Virginia Company." From another source (Flo DeFoor by email): "Capt. [William] POWELL and Capt. John SMITH (not the swashbuckler John SMITH of the original colonists) were brothers-in-law of the Provost Marshall John BURROWS. But the researcher never found out if it was through Capt. POWELL'S wife Margaret [STITT], Capt. SMITH'S wife Susannah, or John BURROW'S wife Bridgette or what. [Note A John BURROW is shown in the 16 Feb 1623 VA census. It isn't always clear which John SMITH is being referred to in these documents.] The genealogist who researched the above information is a direct descendant of a Francis Smith that might fit and in case you missed it above, I am also, and my 24 marker yDNA test results will be viewable in early April, 2004 at: http://smithconnections.com/ [DNA Kit # 18558, Francis Smith, b c1614-19 England, res. abt 1815 Marriage: William Kirk March 26, 1840 Anderson, Tn Death: Sept 11, 1878 Phillipsburg Kansas Children: Kirks,Josiah b. 1841, Tn, James Nelson, b. Nov 10, 1845,Willis Kirk b 1844, Mary Ann Kirk b. 1846, Pleasant Kirk, October 5, 1848, Jemima August 1850, Nancy 1852, William 1854, David 1857. Comments?William Kirk was the son on Elijah and Katherina/Catherine Kirk of Anderson, Tn. William is not shown on 1840 census so is probably still with his mother on that census. There are 9 Smith Families on the 1840 Anderson Co, census but I am assuming that in the days of courting by riding a horse or walking that the family would be fairly close, since you wouldn't want to spend your evening just to get there. That narrows the search down to William Smith who is on Ancestry's image 39, Samuel Smith who is on Image 45, and two William Smiths which are on page 51 I think are a streatch but perhaps possible. Katherine Kirk his mother is on pg 41. So think the first William and Samuel are most likely. Does any one know how I might find who her parents were? 1/15/2005 5:36:00 PM by Email |

Tn. 1860 census Campbell Co shows Lucinda and Riley together but no mention of Mary J. Caswell was in Civil War, was I believe wounded and died soon afterwards. Levi died in Anderson Co.tn. around 1880. 10/31/2004 6:28:06 PM by Email |

Lived in Smith Mills, Henderson Co., KY. We assume he died there. Mary's marriage record to her 3rd husband says he died Jan. 1900. This may be a lie as she married a 2nd time in 1897. There is family stories he was indian and his daughter Nellie Alice (Smith)Finan said he did not talk as though he was white. Story claims he had killed a white man and disappeared or died. |
Birth:
c. 1770 Marriage: Elizabeth Jones UNK UNK Va. Death: UNK Montgomery County Va. Children: John D. 1803, Sarah 1797 Comments?David and Elizabeth we believe had ten children with the above the only ones we have identified. David's father was a Smith that married a Wells and his grandfather was a Smith,Schmidt,or Smythe from Germany who married a Miller from England. They originaly settled in or near Philadelphia. This information comes from an autobiography of John D.'s son Jacob, a Methodist minister. We are chasing two leads, one that several members of David's family moved to Copper Creek, Ky. (Maybe Rockcastle County) and two that there was another brother in Philadelphia who moved to Conn. Both of these leads are from info passed down through the family. 5/30/2003 6:28:19 PM by Email |

Delila Smith-[132] was born on 17 Mar 1780 in Maryland or Wales, England and died on 9 Mar 1868 in Clifton, Mason County, West Virginia, at age 87. Comments?According to Virgil A. Lewis, an early Mason County, West Viginia historian: James Smith was a direct descendent of Major Lawrence Smith who was directed to build a fort near the falls of the Rappahannock River in 1776. James was born in VA and moved to the Santee Valley in the Carolinas. When the Revolutionary War began, he joined a Tory regiment near Spartansburg. His unit was at Bunker Hill, where he was wounded, Kings Mountain and finally, Yorkstown where he was taken prisoner. He later returned home and in 1788, moved his family over the Blue Ridge Mountains to Cook's fort on Indian Creek in Greenbriar County, now Monroe County, WV. He farmed there and later moved his family, except the married children down the Kanawa Valley and eventually settled in Adams County, OH, where he became one of the earliest settlersj. Virgil A.
