Comments?Willie Smith met my grandmother Maggie Mae Streetman of Burnsville, Tishomingo County, MS sometime before 1930 and they ran off to an unknown location and were married. Willie is said to have possibly worked for a Mr. Hanson, as he wore work shirts with the name "Hanson" written inside the collars. He is rumoured to have been from the general area of Greenwood, either Monroe or Itawamba County MS. His death certificate gives only "Bill Smith" and "Miss Thomason" as parents. Place of burial not given on death certificate, but they were living in Mooreville, Lee County, MS at the time of his death. My grandmother's brothers tried to kill him on several occasions. He may have had a criminal record. I do not know, but he must have done something to provoke my granduncles unless they were just downright ornery themselves. My father was raised by his uncle Charlie Jasper Steetman of Burnsville, Tishomingo County, MS from the age of 3 and was told very little about his father's family. I want to solve this mystery.

Sir Rev. Edward Bowyer Smijth/Smyth, and Letitia Cecily Weyland, but I am having trouble proving it. She is not listed in Burkes Peerage, but she died young so that may be the reason.

Comments?Please note!! I have personally verified every name, every date, and every place in the information given from Bible records, census records, marriage records, death records, obituaries, and a letter written by Myles Fredrick Smith (1890-1986), a grandson of James Davenport Smith & Mary Elizabeth [Shaw], about family members he had known personally. The precious little I know about my GG-Grandpa James Davenport Smith is given below. Per the 1860 Oglethorpe Co Ga, he was "Smith, James/HH/wm age 32 Ga/overseer" Per the 1870 Greene Co Ga census, he was "Smith, James/HH/wm age 44 Ga/farmer" Per the 1880 Paulding Co Ga Mortality Schedule: "Smith, J.D./wm age 54 Ga/Ga/Ga/married/farmer/died of typhoid Jun 1879" The only clue I have about any of his kinfolk was found in an old letter written by one of his oldest grandsons, Myles Fredrick Smith, who was born and raised in Polk Co Ga. Cousin Myles wrote that his "grandfather James D. Smith served in the Civil War and that his mother was Prudence Smith." My GG-Grandma, Mary Elizabeth [SHAW] was born 24 Dec 1835 in Abbeville, SC and died between the 1900-1910 Polk Co Ga censuses. Comments?Reverend Moses Smith of Marion Dist., SC had a son, Isaiah. However, his age did not agree with that of Isaiah of Barbour Co. Wile living in GA, Isaiah Smith, son of Mosses Smith, signed a deed 30 Oct. 1857, six months after the death of Isaiah Smith of Barbour Co. Therefore, Isaiah Smith, son of Moses Smith of Marion Dist., SC could not be the Isaiah Smith of Barbour Co. (by Clarine Smith Tucker) Isiah or Isaiah was enumerated in the 1830 census of Houston Co., GA, and was not found in the 1840 census. However, all families were not listed in the census. They were living in Barbour Co., AL by January 1 1842. Isaiah left a will in the courthouse at Clayton (by Clarine Smith Tucker)

Comments?The parents of Peter S. Smith were John Gray Smith m. Elizabeth Josephine Knapp, both from Charleston, SC. Both John Gray and Elizabeth Smith died and are buried in Charleston, SC (documented). Several siblings: Grover, Frank, Ethel, and one other sister whose name escapes me. Peter lived in Manhattan, NYC, at the time he signed to work on the building of the Panama Canal, in 1912. He was a marine engineer by profession, as were most of the men in his family.He met and married my grandmother, Waldina Diaz, in Panama. In 1917, he left Panama to return to the USA, never to see his family in Panama again. Grover, Peter's younger brother, also a marine engineer,lived in Brooklyn, NYC. He and his wife, Anna, originally from Bohemia, show up on the 1930 census for Brooklyn. Grover and his wife did not have any children that we know of. He may have died aboard ship in the 1940s. Peter may have had another family living in Maryland. He worked on several ships after returning to the USA, which I have documented, but he has been lost to our family history.

In my baby book it says RUFUS AND ELIZABETH lived in Tennessee, and HAMMOND GARLAND SMITH b, around 1895, was born in LINOLN COUNTY, TENNESSEE. HAMMOND GARLAND SMITH (aka HENRY G SMITH), married my maternal grandmother MITTIE EARLY AINSWORTH I think around 1918. She divorced him in the 1920's for being a gambler, womanizer, and i was told he was a buisness man, whatever that meant and he hung around stockyards but did not work. (i guess gambling, not sure).....I did find my family, Mittie Smith, Katherine, and Margaret, in the 1930 census w/o Hammond (aka Henry) SMITH, living in Memphis Tennessee. He probably remarried after the divorce and was quite possibly part Indian. I have been hunting for information on him since i can remember.....(it was a closed book as far as my family was concerned)

Comments?William Kirk was the son on Elijah and Katherina/Catherine Kirk of Anderson, Tn. William is not shown on 1840 census so is probably still with his mother on that census. There are 9 Smith Families on the 1840 Anderson Co, census but I am assuming that in the days of courting by riding a horse or walking that the family would be fairly close, since you wouldn't want to spend your evening just to get there. That narrows the search down to William Smith who is on Ancestry's image 39, Samuel Smith who is on Image 45, and two William Smiths which are on page 51 I think are a streatch but perhaps possible. Katherine Kirk his mother is on pg 41. So think the first William and Samuel are most likely. Does any one know how I might find who her parents were?

Smith, to whom Judith was married." I have no idea who George's parents or siblings might have been. I do have a strong feeling that his parents were from Virginia. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Eleanor was the daughter of Jonathan Burnside, sister to Andrew Burnside. Andrew was in Sugar Creek before Eleanor and John. He married Sarah Self. Jonathan that married Malumba Ary went to Arlington, IL. with her family before 1850. Amelia Ann and husband David Taylor were still in Warren County, Ohio in 1851 and in Indiana by 1860.Not sure if Wesley was a child of a first marriage of Jonathan's as he was born before a marriage was recorded in Rockingham County for he and Nelly. No one knows what happened to Abraham. The rest of the children stayed in the Warren/Greene County, Ohio area. Andrew Jackson went by Jackson and was quite a successful farmer. Comments?According to a court case, 'Levisey Smith v. Charles Smith', he and his wife had seperated by 1839, after 46 years of marriage and eight children (of whom five were still living). The document also states that after their marriage, Lavisa and Charles had moved from Virginia to South Carolina and then to Wilson co., Tennessee. Charles moved to Missouri with one of their sons in 1843, where he died. Charles was a Rev. War veteran, trumpeter in the 2nd Reg. VA line.

This information comes from an autobiography of John D.'s son Jacob, a Methodist minister. We are chasing two leads, one that several members of David's family moved to Copper Creek, Ky. (Maybe Rockcastle County) and two that there was another brother in Philadelphia who moved to Conn. Both of these leads are from info passed down through the family.

Comments?According to Virgil A. Lewis, an early Mason County, West Viginia historian: James Smith was a direct descendent of Major Lawrence Smith who was directed to build a fort near the falls of the Rappahannock River in 1776. James was born in VA and moved to the Santee Valley in the Carolinas. When the Revolutionary War began, he joined a Tory regiment near Spartansburg. His unit was at Bunker Hill, where he was wounded, Kings Mountain and finally, Yorkstown where he was taken prisoner. He later returned home and in 1788, moved his family over the Blue Ridge Mountains to Cook's fort on Indian Creek in Greenbriar County, now Monroe County, WV. He farmed there and later moved his family, except the married children down the Kanawa Valley and eventually settled in Adams County, OH, where he became one of the earliest settlersj. Virgil A.
