Wonder about your Smith/Smyth/Schmidt/Smythe line? We are
arranging for DNA Test designed to "Reconstruct the Southern Smith
Families."
It's a Y-chromosome DNA test limited to male Smith/Smyth from
an unbroken line of male Smith/Smyth. The test is targeted specifically at
any Smith who has or thinks he or she has a line of Smiths that were in
a southern state (ie, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, South Carolina,
Arkansas, Louisianna, North Carolina,
Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, West Virginia, etc) at any time (the sheer numbers of Smiths in the world lead to
this qualifier:) You must be a male Smith/Smyth or have a male Smith
relative that could take the test as your representative.Acquaint yourself with DNA testing by visiting web site for Family Tree
DNA, who is conducting the test: The Southern Smiths project is a Y-DNA
project-if you are
looking for an mtDNA project, FamilyTreeDNA has a list of mtDNA projects
here.
If you qualify and wish to take the DNA Test (cheek swab),
OR
(Be sure to look first at the 12 versus 25
versus 37 marker discussion)
As part of the Smith/Smyth Project,
cost of the 12 marker DNA Test will be at a discounted price, down from
$149 to $99 -STRONGLY
suggest that you get, however, the 25 marker test rather than 12 because of the
sheer numbers of Smiths participating. In some cases, 12 markers shows a match
but when 25 markers are used, the match falls apart.
We have been getting a good Baseline of DNA from Smith/Smyth with
"documented" lineage from which Smith/Smyth of "undocumented"
lineage can seek DNA match. Results, identified only by kit number to
protect privacy, will be posted on the internet for
perusal. If you've hit a stonewall in your Smith/Smyth research, DNA test might well be the
answer in jump-starting your Smith/Smyth research. Your DNA may well match DNA
from Smith/Smyth who has documented lineage.
(Note: there is also a
Smiths of New England)
